Why choose a professional photographer for your band or solo artist shoot

in Band Photography, Digital Photography, Solo artist photography / by bandphotography
July 10, 2015

Why indeed

Why not just get a mate to do it,  someone in the band must know someone from their days at college who had a camera or a fan who constantly pursues them with their iPhone.

Well, how many hours have you spent getting that material together, or how many years!

How much cash have you spent in the studio recording. How many taxis, how many beers have you bought as favours that weren’t returned.

Why invest all that time, energy and cash on an inferior set of images to represent you and your music for the next few years. Can you afford to take that risk!

Just so happens, I too have invested years of my life honing my technique, approach, creativity and technical knowledge so I can get it right for the many artists and bands I’ve worked with over the years.

Plus have I spent hard earned cash on equipment, oh yes, full frame Nikon, many lenses, studio lights, speedlite flash guns, backgrounds etc.. We can’t let not having the right gear an excuse to not get an image that elevates you or your band above the rest.

And keeping up with new technology and developments in digital imagery and software manipulation is my bag. Taking a good set of images that are unique and technically proficient is key, but also paramount to me is a an up-to-date software toolbox and over 15 years of post production experience using Photoshop and now every Pro’s favourite, Adobe Lightroom.

If you did give that mate a call, or get back a favour that was owed and the shots just didn’t quite work out, it’s not too late, get in touch and I’ll only be happy to help.

Simon Hirst - Hirsty from Capital FM

Been a while since i used this blog, been real busy moving my work to self-hosted blogs and designing wordpress sites for others.

But enough techy talk. Did a shoot for Simon Hirst (Hirsty) – great guy – he of Capital FM fame. Simon is the main breakfast DJ there so you will have most likely heard his voice. No idea what shot to pick for this post so here’s a little strip I made.

Oh, what the heck, here’s another shot.

Full moon in the streets of Perth

St Johns Kirk, Perth on a winters night

St Johns Kirk, Perth on a winters night

Just been taking night shots in the streets of perth in temperatures of -9 but great fun, no PC up here so shots to come will be posted in the new year.

Had fun trying to balance the tungsten lit church with the blue of the night sky. Exposure challenges too with the snow on the ground, clouds in the sky and a moon that moves if exposure is more than 4 seconds. Was glad to capture the full moon in the streets but not the one shown to me by some drunken chav.

Large room wanted for photoshoot in Leeds area. Old victorian edwardian or georgian room with huge windows and bare floorboards. At least 25 foot square, bigger the better. Can be adorned or preferably a bare deserted shell. Wanted on august 24th in the evening. It doesnt have to be pretty, would even be happy with cobwebs, just need the light, space and atmosphere.

Now heres a photographer we should be watching out for, Rosie Hardy art/self portrait/fashion photographer from Derbyshire. She spoke most eloquently last night at Exposure Leeds to over 50 photographers from the Yorkshire region and she is just 19 having been doing photography for little over 2 years.

The amount of work she has already done is quite incredible but mostly in part to doing a 365 day self portraiture, she didn’t quite manage to doing a self portrait every day of the year without losing all of her hair. Each one is unique and conceptual. Perhaps dissecting herself in the art of self portraiture has not only made her extremely self aware but the examination of herself has made her an excellent photo retoucher and compositor even without using Photoshop but instead using the freely available Gimp software.

Her enthusiasm is really infectious and I don’t think she realises quite the impact she will make in the photographic world, but this is because so much of it is still new to her. She is inspiring of others but still inspired.

Check out Rosie hardy’s work here.

The desert and what might have been

While on my trip to the states I really fell in love with the desert in the spring. Never realised that it has its own sense of space, peace, isolation amd smell, even when you just step out of the car and walk for about 30 seconds, the silence is deafening.

I especially loved Death Valley, the spring is such a fantastic time to go, the heat is not unbearable, in fact it was a pleasant surprise compared to the coldness, frost and snow experienced in Yosemite a few days before. In fact Yosemite is only about a 6 hour drive away – assuming the road is open due to snow on the high sierra pass right up to May or June. We had to go the long way round in April via Bakersfield and Barstow, looping south below the Sequoia National forset.

Somebody once described to me that Bakersfield and Barstow were the armpits of California, and although there may be less to do there than in some other Californian cities we noticed a strong sense of pride in these cities. The pavements were immaculately clean (unlike the UK) and the grass beautifully manicured.

Back to Death Valley, where from there you can find the lowest, the highest, the hottest and the driest. The view from Zabriskies peak is awesome and unbelievably accessible. You really get up close and personal and for photography, there isnt an essence of that UV haze that you get when photographing places like the Grand Canyon. Badwater basin is a must place to go to, the lowest place on the western hemisphere, you really must walk out onto the salt flats, which again are accessible from the road. Right near there is Artists drive, a spectacular explosion of colour amongst the rocks.

One of my regrets about the trip was not being able to shoot a band out in the desert, I think somebody would have really benefited.

Go on over to Flickr to view some of my shots in the states.
